The Centre for Sustainability in Mining and Industry (CSMI) is recognised globally as a centre of excellence in Africa for the training and education of managers, practitioners and regulators in sustainable development. The centre offers courses on occupational safety and risk management, occupational health, the bio-physical environment, community investments and stakeholder engagement.
From our base at the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, the centre integrates the best of global sustainable development practices and programmes through recognised and accredited training particularly in safety, health, environment and community issues. The work of the centre is enriched and broadened by incorporating the experience of a variety of disciplines, including social sciences, medicine, engineering and natural sciences.
The centre also offers a comprehensive range of colloquia, courses and training modules from the policy and strategic planning level of sustainable development theory to practical workplace-focused courses. CSMI staff also supervise fully accredited MSc and PhD research programmes.
